Al-Dostour's new owner still defiant

CAIRO - The new owner of an independent newspaper, whose dissident editor-in-chief was sacked two weeks ago, said Saturday he would maintain the editorial policy of the paper and that he would consider appointing the part-time journalists.

"The editorial policy of Al-Dostour will be the same as before and the newspaper will continue to pursue its role as an advocate of freedom and national interests," businessman Reda Edward said in a message to the head of the Press Syndicate Saturday.

Edward pointed out that it was Ibrahim Eissa, the sacked editor of Al-Dostour, who approached the new owners about purchasing the newspaper.

"Anyway, we will keep the interests of the journalists as our priority. And any decisions concerning them will be reported to the Press Syndicate," Edward wrote in his message.

Eissa was sacked from Al-Dostour by el-Sayyed el-Badawi, the former board chairman of the newspaper, who then sold his stake to Edward.
