Egypt's Al-Ahly reach ACL semis

CAIRO - Egypt's Al-Ahly beat last year's African Champions League (ACL)  runners-up Heartland FC of Nigeria 2-1 in Cairo Sunday night to complete the lineup for the semi-finals with one round left in the group phase.

Al-Ahly ended Heartland's hopes in Group B to become the final team to clinch a place in the last four.

Former Sheffield United winger Ahmed Fathi and striker Mohamed Fadl put the hosts two goals ahead before Emmanuel Nwachi pulled a goal back in the second half.

Al-Ahly, who have won Africa's top club competition a record six times, will finish second in the group behind Algeria's JS Kabylie - the first side to reach the semis two weeks ago.

Holders TP Mazembe Englebert of the Democratic Republic of Congo went through earlier on Sunday from Group A after a 2-1 home win over Zimbabwe's Dynamos in Lubumbashi.

The victory put Mazembe level at the top of the standings with Tunisia's Esperance, who also have 10 points from five matches and the same goal difference.

Esperance's qualification for the last four was ensured on Saturday even though they were held to a 2-2 home draw by Entente Setif of Algeria.

The final round of group matches will be played next weekend but the only issue to be resolved is the placings in Group A.

The semis will be played over two legs next month.
