FM Shoukry to head to Lebanon to help end political vacuum

Egypt's Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry is set to head to Lebanon on Tuesday to present a platform to help end Beirut's political vacuum as it enters its third year, the Egyptian ambassador to Lebanon said.

Ambassador Mohamed Badreddine Zayed explained that Shoukry's visit aims to present support to Lebanese "consensus" in the election of a new president, Ahram Arabic news website reported on Sunday.

Zayed maintained that Egypt is presenting all of its diplomatic and political expertise to the Lebanese and added that his country supports any initiatives that aim for consent between the involved parties.

Lebanon has been suffering from a presidential vacuum since May 2014 following the end of term of former Lebanese President Michel Suleiman ended.

Since then, the country has been suffering from political deadlock as broken alliances between Lebanese parties have prevented a consensus being reached on a presidential candidate.
