20 new articles protecting freedoms in Egypt's draft charter: Spokesperson

Twenty new provisions protecting freedoms have been incorporated into Egypt's draft charter, a spokesperson has said.

The constitution-writing committee has completed all the articles – which may total over 200 – expect those on judicial and military matters, committee spokesperson Mohamed Salmawy told state news agency MENA on Wednesday.

All articles finished by sub-committees will be put to a final vote by the main 50-strong panel, which has already endorsed 120 articles almost two weeks ahead of the deadline, according to Salmawy.

Redrafting the national charter is part of the transitional roadmap set forth by Egypt's interim authorities following Morsi's ouster, which promises parliamentary elections and a presidential vote by mid-2014.

The 2012 Islamist-drafted constitution was suspended after president Mohamed Morsi was ousted by Egypt's army on 3 July after massive protests against his troubled year in power.

Officials say the final version will be completed on 3 December and will be submitted to interim President Adly Mansour for approval before being put to a national referendum.
