Egyptians loved him in 'Al Bernameg', but will Bassem Youssef's new 'The Democracy Handbook' show meet the mark? Well, he released a clip, so we'll let you be the judges.
Bassem Youssef's back at it again with the production of his new (and highly anticipated) show, The Democracy Handbook, for Fusion's F-Comedy network. No one's all too sure what to expect of the doctor-turned-comedian now that he's heading back on the air in a totally different context, but until he releases his first episode, he's reviving his doctoral roots and focusing on a new a medical device to aid his new American neighbors.
With anti-Islamic sentiments among Americans at an all-time high (thanks, Donald Trump), the fear of Muslims has reached new heights. Coming to the rescue, Dr. Youssef is introducing the Breathe Easy, complete with a demonstration (read: a sneak peek at what his new show might look like?).
We're used to seeing Youssef do his thing in Arabic, with an amazing Arabic writing team, to boot, so this is all a little weird to us. His whole tone is a little different in English, but he's still channeling that same sarcastic vibe and his signature raised eyebrow.
Love it? Hate it? We've got a few mixed opinions about what appears to be a snippet of what we should expect from The Democracy Handbook, but we've also got a bunch of questions. Will he be as funny in English as he was in Arabic? Will he just keep hitting on the old Arab/Muslim in America stereotypes? Is he going to take a different spin on the old stereotypes - you know, given that he's suggesting the Breathe Easy (patent surely pending) as a way to tell how religiously extreme your sexual partner is... We're not sure. We're not even sure if he's targeting 'the West', Egyptians, Egyptians in the West, or another category that's yet to cross our minds.
