Advisor to health minister detained over bribery

Advisor to the Health Minister Ahmed Aziz was ordered detained pending investigations Tuesday for accepting a 4.5 million EGP ($506,710,) bribe from the Egyptian agent of a European medical equipment company, Youm7 reported.

The prosecution embarked on the case after receiving it from the Homeland Security; it has a film of Aziz receiving the bribe, according to Youm7.

The Health Ministry has tasked a mediator company with the replacement and renovation of the bone marrow transplant unit at the National Nasser Institute at a cost of 28 million EGP for nine operating rooms, 4 million EGP per room.

However, the advisor accepted the bribe to select the said agent company to import the medical equipment, according to the initial investigations. The bribe was covered up by claiming that an operating room costs 4 million EGP, while in fact it costs 950,000 EGP.

Health Minister Ahmed Emad el-Din will be summoned to testify in the case; however he refused to comment on the charge of his advisor.
