High court upholds niqab ban during exams

Egypt’s High Administrative Court rejected Tuesday a total of 20 appeals against a decision banning academic students wearing niqab (a veil that covers Muslim women’ face but not usually the eyes) to conduct their final exams, Youm7 reported.Egypt’s  High Administrative Court rejected Tuesday a total of 20 appeals against a decision banning academic students wearing niqab (a veil that covers Muslim women’ face but not usually the eyes) to conduct their final exams, Youm7 reported.

A Cairo Administrative Court had accepted lawsuits filed by number of niqabi students from Tanta and Cairo University after the Universities decided to ban them from attending their exams in 2009, according to Mastryat website.

Although the Administrative Court ruled that niqabi students have right to enter universities to sit their exams, some universities including Cairo and Masoura did not apply the decision.

On the first day of the 2015/2016 academic year, Cairo University announced it had banned its academic staff from wearing niqab; the decision, which was put into effect on Sept. 29, came “in order to facilitate communicating with students and to provide appropriate educational process.”

The decision was slammed by a number of niqabi lecturers and more than 70 academic teachers filed complaints against the University.
