25 mn voters registered for phase 1 of parliamentary polls: HEC

The High Elections Commission has said that approximately 25 million voters were registered for the first stage of elections for the House of Representatives which kick off next Saturday for expatriates and on Sunday for home-based voters.

The commission, chaired by Judge Ayman Abbas, said the first stage covers 14 provinces, with 2,573 runners vying for individual seats and eight electoral lists vying through a proportional lists system.

Voters aged between 21 and 30 represent the highest number of voters in that phase, accounting for 30 percent of the total (7.5 million) according to the HEC statistic. Voters aged above 60 account for less than five million, said the commission, which pointed out that male voters account for a larger portion of the voter list.

The elections are scheduled to end by December 2, in case runoff votes are needed.
