31 Egyptians deported from Italy, 20 arrested before illegal travel to Libya

The attempt of 20 persons to illegally travel to Libya was foiled in Matrouh, and 31 Egyptians were deported by Italy Monday for illegal immigration, Youm7 reported.

Three of the Egyptian deportees who arrived in Cairo Airport were arrested for being runaway convicts, the source said. The group had reached Italy by sea, and 22 arrived to Cairo from Catania and 22 came in a flight from Rome.

Fourteen of the defendants arrested on the borders of Libya are from Minya in Upper Egypt, four are from Matrouh and one is from Beheira.

A total of 2,215 people were arrested for illegal immigration in September, according to military spokesperson Mohamed Samir.

Egypt arrests dozens almost on weekly basis for attempting to travel illegally to Europe through the Delta’s Mediterranean shores or to Libya through desert routes in the Western Desert. Many of the migrants are Egyptian.

Further, hundreds of Egyptians have been deported from Italy and Saudi Arabia in the past year.
