Egypt court sentences former Islamist MP Ismail to life in prison

Former Islamist MP Islamist Mamdouh Ismail was sentenced to life inprison in absentia Monday on charges of involvement in violent events in Roed El-Farag following the dispersal of pro-Morsi sit-ins in 2013.Former Islamist MP Islamist Mamdouh Ismail was sentenced to life inprison in absentia Monday on charges of involvement in violent events in Roed El-Farag following the dispersal of pro-Morsi sit-ins in 2013.

Life in prison verdict in Egypt carries a sentence of 25 years.

Cairo Criminal Court also sentenced Ismail's brother to ten years in jail, and seven years for another suspect, five years for five suspects and three years for 58 suspects.

Fourteen suspects were found innocent, out of 80 people being tried in the case.

The defendants were accused of killing on purpose, disrupting peace and security, joining a terrorist organisation, damaging public and private facilities, and for participating in violent events in Rod El-Farag in August after the dispersal of the pro-Morsi Rabaa and Al-Nahda sit-ins.

Ismail was a former member of the 2011 parliament representing the radical Islamist group Al-Gamaa Al-Islamiya.
