Egyptian teen wrestler jumped out of car, died after physical abuse from father: Interior ministry

A young Egyptian female wrestler died after jumping out of a moving car last week near Ismailia after being chided by her father, Egypt's interior ministry said on Wednesday.

Although reports had initially suggested that 16-year-old Reem Magdy was hit by a car while crossing the Cairo-Ismailia Road, her father later acknowledged that he had mistreated her, according to the ministry.

"On the day of the incident, the victim's father rebuked and beat her in front of her colleagues after a training session," the statement read.

“On her way home with her mother and sister, the father continued to scold her so the victim opened the car door and threw herself out, resulting in her death.”

"The victim's mother and sister acknowledged what the investigations have concluded, contradicting the claims of her father that her death was the result of a road accident. The father also eventually confessed to what he did."

Magdy had won a bronze medal at the Cadet Wrestling World Championships held in Georgia in September.

She also won a golden medal in the Africa Championship for Junior Wrestlers in July.
