Egypt parliament approves new NGO law

Egypt's parliament approved on Tuesday a new NGO law that could replace the standing 2002 law if ratified.

The 89-article ‎law was drafted by the chairman of parliament's social ‎solidarity committee, Abdel-Hadi El-Qasabi, and ‎‎203 other MPs. Forty articles of the law were approved on Monday, the first day of discussion, and the draft was approved in Tuesday's session.

The new law will now go to the State Council for revisions before returning to parliament for a final vote.

Speaker Ali Abdel-Aal said that parliament welcomes any comments from the government on the law.

The current law regulating the work of NGOs is 84 of 2002, and will be void once a new law is ratified by the president.

A version of the bill has been leaked to the press, and has since been widely criticised by human rights organisations.
