Five minors given 5-year sentences for Red Sea islands protest

A Giza juvenile court sentenced five minors to 5 years in prison and fines of EGP 100,000 each on Thursday for their participation in protests against an Egyptian-Saudi Red Sea maritime border demarcation agreement in April that determined two Red Sea islands controlled by Egypt belonged to Saudi Arabia.

The prosecution accused the defendants of illegal protesting, joining a terrorist organisation and disturbing the public peace.

The minors were arrested during the protests against the Egyptian-Saudi deal involving the islands of Tiran and Sanafir in Messah Square, Giza.

The ruling may still be appealed.
