New Israeli ambassador in Egypt visits famous Cairo synagogues

The recently-appointed Israeli ambassador to Egypt David Goverin visited on Tuesday famous Jewish synagogues in Cairo with the Israeli embassy staff, the embassy announced on Wednesday.

Goverin visited with the head of the Jewish community in Egypt, Magda Haroun, and three famous Jewish synagogues in Cairo: Ben Ezra synagogue in Old Cairo, the Sha'ar Hashamayim synagogue in downtown Cairo and the Meyr Biton synagogue in Maadi.

 
The Ben Ezra synagogue is considered one of the oldest known synagogues in Cairo. 
 
This David Goverin's first public outing after the new ambassador arrived in Cairo two weeks ago to replace former ambassador Haim Koren. 
 
Goverin was posted in the Israeli embassy in Cairo in the 1990s and can speak Arabic fluently.
 
According to some estimates, there are less than 10 Egyptian Jews living in the country but no official figures.
