Pre-trial detention of satirical street performers extended

A Cairo prosecution has extended the pre-trial detention of members of a satirical street performance group for 15 days pending investigations over charges of inciting protests against the state, Youm7 reported Tuesday.

It has been reported that four people out of the six-member group are currently detained.

The group Awlad el-Shawarea or “Street Children” face charges of broadcasting videos on the internet that incite protests against state institutions and include insults to state figures.

The satirical group has posted a number of videos on Facebook, where they shoot selfie-style clips from the street.

Their arrest has stirred a supporting campaign by social media activists who posted pictures of themselves holding mobile phones in front of their faces with a caption that turned to a trending hashtag: “Does a mobile phone camera rattle you?”

Some of the videos include old cartoon songs, triggering a sense of nostalgia among viewers, while others poke fun at politics. Their clips have attracted many followers.
