31 arrested for migration attempt to Libya

Border guards thwarted an attempt by 54 persons who were attempting to cross the border from Egypt into Libya, Youm7 reported Wednesday.

The defendants; 50 Egyptians and four Sudanese nationals, were caught attempting to enterLibya through desert routes near the city of Sallum, security sources told Youm7.

Despite the deteriorating conditions in Libya, border guards have arrested hundreds of Egyptians and foreigners on a near-daily basis at the western Sallum border crossing, who were trying to reach Libyan territories.

Officials previously announced that numbers of those who managed to escape and illegally migrate to Libya is twice as much as the number of those stopped at the Sallum border.

Matrouh Security Director Hisham Lotfy said that during the past 24 hours, a total of 715 Egyptian and Libyan citizens have crossed the Sallum crossing in either direction.

The figure includes 241 legal arrivals and 87 illegal arrivals, Lotfy was quoted by Youm7.

A total of 155,692 Egyptians have returned from Libya following the beheading of 21 Egyptian nationals by Islamic State (IS) militants in February 2015, according to Lotfy.
