Egypt to start digging 4 tunnels beneath Suez Canal by June: MEA

Egypt will start digging four tunnels to facilitate automobile movement beneath the Suez Canal by June, stated Egyptian Military engineering Authority chairperson Kamel Al-Wazir Sunday.

The project is the first phase of digging six tunnels beneath the canal to link the canal cities with Sinai; the two other tunnels will be designed for train movement, Youm7 reported.

Two of the car tunnels will be in northern Ismailia, while the two others will be dug in Port Said governorate to reduce the 5-hour travel time Sinai.

He added that the authority will install a tunnel boring machine (TBM) on April 25 while the second TBM will be installed soon, al-Wazir added during his tour with President’s Aide for National Projects Ibrahim Mahlab.

Egypt has launched a number of large-scale development projects, including establishing a logistic hub and industrial processing center at the Suez Canal to be a gateway for European/Asian markets.

In February, Egypt has inaugurated a new shipping lane, parallel to east Port Said entrance to allow ships to navigate in both directions simultaneously and reduce the waiting time for vessels passing through the main Suez Canal and the Mediterranean in both ways.
