Street vendors removed from pedestrian bridge in Qalubiya

A magnified security campaign has removed illegal street vendors on a pedestrian bridge above the Shubra el-Khema metro station, in Qalubiya governorate, Youm7 reported Thursday.

The campaign confiscated the goods of the displaced vendors and made the way in front of pedestrian traffic up the bridge.

“These campaigns come in the framework of a strategy adopted by the Interior Ministry to combat attempts to disrupt public security,” read a statement by the Ministry of Interior.

A crackdown on street vendors, under which dozens have been removed from streets, started in Cairo last August.

Last week, the Giza governorate followed Cairo’s footsteps and began displacing street vendors.

Cairo’s displaced vendors were relocated to the Torgoman Garage in 2014; however, some 1,300 vendors reportedly have not received their booths so far.

The main aim of the crackdown is to end traffic congestion that prevails in Egypt’s streets, often near metro stations.
