Cairo court upholds LE50,000 fines for protesters

A Cairo court on Sunday dismissed an appeal against a LE50,000 fine for 86 people who were convicted of participating in unauthorised protests in Tahrir Square in January this year, Al-Ahram Arabic website reported.

On March, the court acquitted 86 people detained during protests commemorating the anniversary of the 2011 revolution, but fined them LE50,000.

Twenty-three people were killed during the protests and 97 were injured when police dispersed demonstrators.

The interior ministery stated that it detained over 500 people on 25 January for inciting violence and blocking roads.

Under a protest law enacted in 2013, demonstrators who have not obtained prior approval from the police may face jail terms and fines for illegal protesting.
