The Holy Complex of the Coptic Orthodox Church will not this year hold “an iftar for national unity;" a charity iftar for fasting Muslims, in order to make donations to a national fund, a spokesman for the Church told Ahram Online
The "iftar for national unity" in the past was used to reinforce unity between Christians and Muslims. It entailed offering a free breaking of the fast meal, targeted to the poor.
Father Boulos Halim said the Church decided that they will donate the iftar expenses to the "Long Live Egypt" national fund.
"Long Live Egypt" was established by President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi to boost the economy.
The Coptic Orthodox Church represents around 90 percent of Egypt's Christians.
