Prosecution appeals acquittal of 17 protesters in Shaimaa al-Sabbagh’s case

Egypt’s Attorney-General Hisham Barakat appealed the acquittal of 17 people of organizing a January illegal protest where activist Shaimaa al-Sabbagh was killed, Youm7 reported Tuesday.

On May 23, Abdeen Misdemeanor Court acquitted 17 members of the Socialist Popular Alliance Party of violating the protest law and inciting riots, saying the acquittal is based on “the ambiguity and lack of evidences against the defendants.”

Qasr al-Nile Misdemeanor Court of Appeal set July 13 to consider Barakat’s appeal.

Sabbagh was fatally shot in a peaceful march commemorating the 4th anniversary of the January 25 Revolution near Tahrir Square. On May 17, Barakat referred a policeman to a criminal court over charges of killing the activist. Sabbagh was one of the defendants, but the case was dropped against her due to her death.
