Hamas denies existence of new Egypt cease-fire proposal

Hamas political deputy Samy Abu Zoheiry denied Monday media reports claiming Egypt would announce a new cease-fire proposal between Palestine and Israel.Hamas political deputy Samy Abu Zoheiry denied Monday media reports claiming Egypt would announce a new cease-fire proposal between Palestine and Israel.

A Palestinian official told AFP early Monday that Egypt proposed a new proposal that included opening a key border crossing and allowing the entry of humanitarian aid into Gaza. The official, who requested anonymity, said Egypt would invite both Israeli and Palestinian authorities to resume cease-fire talks, which came to an impasse on Aug. 19.

“There is no new Egyptian proposal for a cease-fire in Gaza,” Abu Zoheiry told Al Jazeera Mubashir Monday. He posted on his Facebook page that efforts are still being exerted to reach an agreement.

Meanwhile, Hamas negotiation representative Izzat Risheq said Monday on Twitter that there is no new information concerning a cease-fire.

The Cairo Post tried to reach Egyptian Foreign Ministry spokesman Badr Abdel Atty for comment, but he was unavailable.

Egypt Sunday repeated calls for both sides to accept a cease-fire and return to talks, according to a statement from the Egyptian Foreign Ministry.

Since the beginning of the ongoing Israel-Gaza war in July, 2,131 Palestinians have been killed and 10,890 injured according to Palestinian Healthy Ministry spokesman Ashraf al-Qedra Monday. In that same period, 68 Israelis have been killed; four of them civilians and the rest soldiers, AFP reported.
