Cairo’s street vendors protest against security campaign to remove them

Dozens of street vendors gathered in front of the attorney general’s office to protest against campaigns launched by the government on Sunday to move them into the Torgoman garage in Downtown Cairo, according to a video that was posted on Video7 Monday.

The campaign to move Downtown street vendors to Torgoman garage continued for the second consecutive day Monday, in a bid to ease traffic congestion.

“We want to eat… Mahlab is a failure of a person,” street vendors chanted during the protest, referring to Prime Minister Ibrahim Mahlab.

Security forces have intensified their presence in the vicinity of the attorney general’s office to prevent street vendors participating in the protest from entering the office as well as to prevent any violent attacks.

Meanwhile, dozens of street vendors protested at the Egyptian Supreme Court and chanted slogans against the Cabinet.

Protesters raised banners condemning procedures taken by the government against street vendors.

A number of slogans were chanted, including “One, two… Abdel Fatah al-Sisi where are you?” and “We need a free government… life has become too hard.”

More than 192 street vendors have so far been moved to the temporary location at Torgoman garage, which has the capacity for more than 1,750 vendors, ‫Al-Mousky District leader Hussein Al-Shater told Youm7 Monday.

“Street vendors will not return to occupy Downtown streets,” Cairo Governor Galal Said said Monday. He added Downtown is now clean and free of street vendors due to the intensified security presence, Al-Watan reported.

Minister of Interior Mohamed Ibrahim went on an inspection tour on Monday in Downtown Cairo to supervise the process as part of a national campaign that started Sunday across Egypt in collaboration with the Cairo governorate.

This campaign, according to Youm7, is going to be executed in the Downtown area, Opera Square, Esaaf Square in front of the Torgoman garage and in other streets in the Cairo governorate.
