Armed forces launches intensive crackdown in Sinai

The armed forces have destroyed two homemade rockets, two remote controlled car bombs along with six explosive devices in a crackdown targeting hideouts of “takfiri” group members in North Sinai’s city of Sheikh Zuweid, military spokesperson Mohamed Samir in a statement.

Two takfiri members were injured and 16 suspects were arrested following a fire exchange with military forces, Samir said.

The crackdown comes days after the armed attack that took place on the checkpoint near Farafra Oasis, leaving 22 border guards killed and four injured.

The destroyed cars were carrying a number of rockets heading to the international borders line, said Samir adding that the operation targeted15 houses used as shelters for the takfiri members and destroyed a vehicle and 21motorcyles without license.

A branch of the Islamic State (IS) on Tuesday has claimed responsibility for the Farafra Oasis attack, according to a statement on its alleged website.
