A low ranking police officer was shot dead by unknown assailants on Sunday in the North Cairo district of Madinat Al-Salam, according to reports from Cairo's security directorate.
The officer, Emad Abdel-Aziz, 37, was shot three times while on his way to work at the city's traffic authority on Sunday morning, the directorate reported.
The assailants also stole Abdel-Aziz's gun. Security forces are investigating the scene of the shooting.
Egypt's security forces have been targeted in continual attacks by Islamist militant groups since the ouster of Muslim Brotherhood president Mohamed Morsi in July of last year.
Hundreds of security personnel have been killed. The Egyptian army has stepped up campaigns against the militant groups, especially in the restive Sinai Peninsula.
