Coptic movements divided over participation in Mohamed Mahmoud commemorations

CAIRO: A state of division dominated the Coptic movements regarding their participation in the commemoration of the second anniversary of the Mohamed Mahmoud clashes on Nov. 19, reported Youm7.CAIRO: A state of division dominated the Coptic movements regarding their participation in the commemoration of the second anniversary of the Mohamed Mahmoud clashes on Nov. 19, reported Youm7.

A number of movements have rejected participation in protest of the refusal of the 50-Member Committee to allocate a parliamentary quota for the Copts, while others refuse to participate as they consider the armed forces as partially responsible for the deaths and violence on Nov. 19, 2011.

Andrawes Oweda, General Coordinator of the Maspero Youth Union, said that the union will not participate in the event even if the army announced an official commemoration, in the light of the approach adopted by the 50-Member Committee to draft an extremist constitution to pave the way for establishing a religious state in Egypt.

Fady Youssef, founder of Egypt’s Copts coalition, announced that the coalition will participate in commemorating the second anniversary of the Mohamed Mahmoud clashes, describing the participation in the event as a duty in order to not to forget the victims of these clashes.
