Sudan lifts near two-year ban on Egyptian agricultural products

Sudan has implemented a decision made in October 2018 to lift a near two-year ban on Egyptian agricultural products, Sudanese media reported Wednesday.

In press statements carried by the Sudan Media Centre (SMC), the undersecretary of the Sudanese Ministry of Industry and Commerce, Abdel-Rahman Agab Ahmed, said the decision to lift the ban on Egyptian products has been implemented officially.

He provided details related to the decision, adding that imports and exports between the two countries would be carried out by licensed companies only.

Any product that doesn t match specifications, health requirements, and applicable laws will not be allowed entry to the country, according to Ahmed.

The official implementation comes a few months after Sudanese President Omar Al-Bashir decided to end the March 2017 ban, following Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi s visit to Sudan in October 2018.

The 2017 ban came as an extension of a 2016 ban on all Egyptian imports of vegetables, fruit and fish over accusations of contamination and a range of other disputes.

The ban hit Egypt s exports trade, with a decline in exports to Sudan from $164 million dollars worth in 2016 to $44 million in 2017.

Egypt has said that food exports are expected to increase during the coming months following the Sudanese president s decision to overturn the ban.
