Egypts FM discusses political solution to Syrian crisis with Western, Arab partners in Brussels

Egypt s Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry discussed the Syrian crisis with a number of Arab and Western counterparts during a mini summit held to discuss the issue in Brussels, Belgium on Wednesday.

In an official statement, Egypt s foreign ministry spokesman Ahmed Abu Zeid said that Shoukry met with the foreign ministers of the UK, the US, France, Germany, Saudi Arabia, and Jordan, who spoke about how to push for a political settlement to the Syrian conflict.

The ministers stressed the necessity of the UN s Special Envoy to Syria Staffan de Mistura calling for preliminary meetings on drafting the constitution as an essential step to resuming talks, which have been stalled for over six months.

The summit also involved discussions on the progress in combating the terrorist group Daesh in Syria, whose presence has been reduced to the northeast and southwest of the country.

Shoukry spoke during the summit about Egypt s efforts to push for a political resolution to the crisis, whether through its continued consultations with different parties, or through the intensified talks with Special Envoy Mistura to support his efforts in pushing for talks on drafting the Syrian constitution.

Shoukry reiterated Egypt s position on the necessity of an immediate political resolution to the crisis to preserve Syria s unity, sovereignty and the safety of its lands without influence from any foreign parties in Syrian lands.

Egypt s participation for the first time in the select members summit was a result of Egypt s engagement in extended talks with different regional and international partners to put in place a political solution to the Syrian crisis, according to a previous Egyptian foreign ministry statement.
