Where Were the Egyptians?

If anybody has been turning on the TV and watching sports, they would have noticed the Olympics that have been going on in South Korea these past two weeks.

First let s state the obvious, yes, these are the winter Olympics. But even so, that didn t prevent a lot of Californians and Europeans from competing in these games. So, I will not penalize the Egyptians because we do live in a desert after all! But you know when I think about the Summer Olympics, where were the Egyptians?

I think the question that is really bothering me, is why don t we as a nation, value sports? I believe there was one medallist in the past Summer Olympics for weightlifting. But what about the other sports like volleyball, running or swimming? Also I don t accept any excuse that people are too poor or oppressed to train in facilities that allow athletes to compete. The Olympics celebrate superior athletes and the best in class. Some of these competitors come from the poorest places in the world and yet they achieve gold or silver medals.

I m not sure if the issue is that we live in a society that doesn t value fitness or if we live in a society where nobody genuinely cares about sports. Either way, my hope for the Olympics in the future is that we can see the Egyptians represent their country. This new generation of Egyptians comes with many talents across many different parts of life. I know from first-hand that there are really fast runners, and people who love swimming, not to mention that everyone loves soccer!

There is no shame in competition, and there is no shame in fitness. I hope the Egyptians can come and rally together to create a great national team representing our great country.
