Egypts Sisi, Italian interior minister discuss bilateral cooperation, Regeni case

Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi discussed with Italian interior minister Marco Minniti during a meeting in Cairo boosting Egyptian-Italian ties as well as the ongoing probe into the 2016 murder of Italian student Giulio Regeni in Cairo, El-Sisis office said.

El-Sisi and Minniti discussed "means to bolster ties between the two countries and exchanged views on international and regional issues of mutual interest," a statement by the Egyptian presidency said.
 
El-Sisi also affirmed Cairos "sincere will" to successfully conclude the investigations into Regenis murder.
 
The 28-year-old Regeni was found dead in early February 2016 days after disappearing in Cairo. Regenis body bore sign of torture.
 
A meeting between Egyptian and Italian prosecutors will take place "soon" to discuss results of the investigation, the presidencys statement said.
 
In April 2016, Italy withdrew its ambassador from Cairo over what it said were delays in the investigation. The Italian ambassador returned to Cairo in September.
 
Minniti said that the two countries are also planning to boost cooperation in facing terrorism and irregular migration, and that Italy aims to bolster economic ties with Cairo by increasing Italian investments in the Arab country.
