Egypts FM meets Libyas PM, UN envoy to Libya in Paris following ceasefire agreement

Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry met with Libya s Prime Minister Fayez Al-Serraj and the United Nations  envoy to Libya Ghassan Salame in Paris on Tuesday, a foreign affairs ministry statement released early Wednesday read.

According to the statement, Shoukry hailed the meeting that took place, also in Paris on Tuesday, between Al-Serraj and the divided country s eastern commander Khalifa Haftar, during which they both committed to a conditional ceasefire and and to work towards holding elections next spring, in talks chaired by French President Emmanuel Macron.

The meeting between Al-Serraj and Haftar “represents an important additional step on the path to achieve national reconciliation and heal the rift between the different Libyan factions,” the statement added.

Shoukry also praised the UN s efforts in Libya and cited the importance of implementing the Skhirat agreement, which was signed in Morocco in 2015 and mandates the reaching of a peaceful transition of power in Libya and the establishment of a national unity government.

Since the ousting of long-time Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi in 2011, the country has slid into conflict, and now has rival governments and parliaments in the west and east.
