Egypt’s Prime Minister Sherif Ismail on Thursday issued a decision exempting imported sugar from customs duties till May 30, 2017.
The decision comes amid shortage in the basic commodity that has been recently monitored in the local markets across the country. The decision was published in the official gazette on Thursday.
Earlier this year, Egypt raised import tariffs on raw cane and raw beet sugar to 20 percent from 2 percent, according to a United States Department of Agriculture report.
Egypt consumes around 3.2 million tons of sugar annually but produces just over 2 million tons.
