Egypt probe into murder of Regeni ‘accurate, transparent': FM

The Egyptian Foreign ministry spokesperson Ahmed Abu Zeid said Egyptian Investigations into killing of slain Italian researcher Guilio Regeni are “accurate and transparent.”

Guilio Regeni, 28, was murdered in late January or early February and the initial investigations revealed signs of torture on his body. In late March the Egyptian Interior Ministry stated that police had killed four “gang members” suspected of involvement in his killing, however, Regeni’s family has said it is not been convinced of Egypt’s statements .

“Egypt understood the official and popular influence of the incidents on the Italian public opinion, but that does not mean that there is no cooperation or transparency from the Egyptian side,” Abu Zeid told “Respected People” talk show on ON T.V.

Italian Foreign Minister Paolo Gentiloni said in a speech at the Italian Parliament that in case that Egyptian authority did not change its tack, his country would take unspecified measures against Cairo, Reuters reported.

It is scheduled that an Egyptian delegation will head to Rome this Wednesday to update the Italian side on the investigation’s developments, according to Egypt’s Attorney General Office statement issued Tuesday.

President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi discussed Tuesday the murder of Regeni with a delegation visiting Cairo from the NATO parliamentary Assembly, saying that there are “transparet cooperation” with the Italian side to identify the reasons behinds the murder case, said Egyptian Presidency in a statement.

“President al-Sisi also noted that Egypt is keen to uncover the circumstances surrounding the disappearance of Egyptian citizen Adel Moawwad since October 2015,” the statement continued.

Moawwad has been reportedly missing since October after his wife and children left Rome to Cairo, al-Watan newspaper reported on March 13. He works a chef in an Italian restaurant. The investigations have been launched in italy.
