Egypt’s Regeni delegation will fly to Rome Wednesday: Prosecution

The Egyptian delegation investigating the murder of Italian Researcher Giulio Regeni in Egypt will depart for Rome on Wednesday, public prosecution said in a statement.

The statement follows reports from judicial and security sources on Monday saying that the Egyptian officials had postponed the trip. According to Reuters, the delegation was initially scheduled to fly on Tuesday. Judicial sources then stated that the trip would be delayed until Thursday, but gave no further explanation for the change of plans.

On the re-scheduled trip, now set for Wednesday, the delegation will review with Rome the outcome of interrogations conducted by prosecution into the Regeni case. The presentation of findings will be lead by deputy prosecutor Mostafa Suleiman.

The visit was agreed upon by Egyptian top prosecutor Nabil Sadeq and his Italian counterpart Giuseppe Pignatone during the Italian prosecutor's recent visit to Cairo.

A senior official of the Egyptian interior ministry told Reuters the investigation concluded that Regeni — who was researching the rise of independent trade unions in Egypt — was being watched by security services but that it did not mean that they killed him, despite the suspicions of human rights groups.

The case has caused friction between Egypt and Italy, though some believe it unlikely this will lead to a permanent rift, thanks to strong trade ties between the two countries and Egypt's strategic role in the Middle East.
