Two others were sentenced to five years in prison, and six were handed down the same penalty yet in absentia. All the defendants were also charged with “belonging to a terrorist group” by the Belbais Misdemeanor Court in Sharqia, the Delta.

The case dates back to 2014 in the town of Abu Hammad. The years of 2013 and 2014 witnessed massive protests against the ouster of President Mohamed Morsi.

Thousands of defendants have been arrested in the demonstration over violating the 2013 protest law, belonging to a “terrorist group,” while others have been arrested for sabotaging state and private facilities and attacking the military and police.

Under the 2013 legislation, all political demonstrations must first obtain permission from security forces.
