FEP approves resignation of MP Emad Gad from party

The Free Egyptians Party (FEP) approved MP Emad Gad’s resignation from the party Monday after Gad submitted his letter of resignation to the head of the FEP in January.

Gad, who was elected to the Egyptian legislative body under the auspices of the FEP, announced his resignation from the party on the “Huna Al-Asema” television show, stating that his decision to resign comes following personal disputes with Alaa Abed, the head of the party in parliament.

After his party membership was frozen, Gad announced he would run for the position of deputy speaker of the parliament, but outside of FEP-affiliation.

“The party permitted Gad’s resignation due to tensions after his announcement and despite the fact that he did not provide a clear reason for his resignation,” FEP spokesman Shehab Waguih told Daily News Egypt.

In accordance with the Egyptian Constitution of 2014, the House of Representatives will decide whether Gad will be allowed to remain a member of parliament as an independent or will be disallowed from continuing as an MP in the parliament.

Article 6 of the Constitution stipulates that if a member of parliament changes his or affiliation to become an independent, he or she will lose parliamentary membership, except in the case of receipt of a vote of approval of a two-third majority of MPs.

Gad is a political analyst and joined the FEP in 2015 as the party’s secretary-general. He was previously a member of the Egyptian Social Democratic Party (ESDP).
