Egypt's Sisi says 'respects separation of powers' as new parliament convenes
In a statement released on Sunday night after the first session of the new parliament convened, Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi said "totally respects" the separation of powers.

"We totally respect the separation of powers and I wish to show all support and help for the newly elected parliament," read the statement released by the presidency.

Egypt's House of Representatives is the country's first parliament since the the previous legislature was dissolved by a court ruling in June 2012.

The body will take over legislative powers, which have been held by President El-Sisi since his election in 2014.

El-Sisi stressed that the House of Representatives will find "all support and assistance" from the executive branch of the state.

He also stressed the importance of the parliament's role at the regional and the international levels.

El-Sisi said that the election of parliament, the third step in the transitional roadmap - announced in July 2013 after the ouster of Islamist president Mohamed Morsi- will complete the institution building process in Egypt.

"The parliament will fulfill the hopes and aspirations of the Egyptian people in the formation of a modern state that upholds the values of democracy and justice in order to complete the process of development which was begun by the Egyptian people," El-Sisi said.
