Press Syndicate calls for immediate release of 2 journalists
The Freedoms Committee at the Egyptian Journalists’ Syndicate denounced Sunday the “arbitrary detention” of a journalist who was arrested from his house Saturday, according to a statement issued by the committee.

The committee called for immediate release of journalist Abdel Rahaman Mohamed, executive editor of Al Mesryoon newspaper, who has been arrested at dawn from his house in Qalyubia’s city of Qanater el Khayreyya. It asked for opening investigations into his arrest.

The committee also accused the Ministry of Interior of “enforced disappearance” of the German News Agency (DPA) Journalist Sobhi Shoaib who was arrested in May although the Attorney General has ordered his release.

A total of 33 journalists in Egypt have been held in custody, the committee said, urging all journalists and media figures to spare no efforts for putting an end to the detention of journalists.

In the third anniversary of the January 25 Revolution, security forces arrested at least 19 journalists, reporters and photographers, and a number of crowds were hostile to working journalists, said Press Syndicate member Abeer al Saady on Jan 24.

The yearly census issued Dec. 1 by the Committee to Protect Journalists ranked Egypt among the world’s top 10 jailers of journalists in 2013.
