Nobel winner ElBaradei to speak at Illinois State University

A Nobel laureate known for his efforts to prevent the spread of nuclear weapons is set to speak at Illinois State University.

Mohamed ElBaradei (ehl-BEHR’-uh-day) will speak Wednesday evening. His topic will be “Preventing a Nuclear Nightmare.”

ElBaradei is the former director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency. He and the agency were awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2005 for preventing nuclear energy from being used for military purposes.

ElBaradie was named Egypt’s interim vice president in July 2013 but resigned weeks later in objection to a violent crackdown by security forces on protesters.

He is delivering this year’s Adlai E. Stevenson Memorial Lecture. The lecture series is co-hosted by Illinois Wesleyan and ISU. It is named for the politician who grew up in Bloomington.
