Almost 6,000 candidates apply for Egypt parliamentary elections: HEC
Around 900 people applied Saturday to run in Egypt's upcoming parliamentary elections, bringing the total number of prospective candidates so far to 5,936, state news agency MENA reported.

The door for filing applications to run in the elections set to start 17 October closed on Saturday.

However, In Qena and Qous, the deadline for candidacy applications has been extended to 15 September after a recent court ruling on redrawing constituency boundaries concerning independent seats.

Higher Elections Committee (HEC) spokesperson Omar Marawan said three electoral lists applied in Cairo: Fi Hob Masr (For the Love of Egypt), the Nour Party, and the Coalition of the Egyptian Front and the Independence Current.

In Upper Egypt, three lists applied: Nidaa Masr (Egypt's Calling), the Coalition of the National Awakening, and Fi Hob Masr. In the East Delta, only Fi Hob Masr applied.

In West Delta, five lists applied: Fi Hob Masr, Nour Party, Forsan Masr (Egypt's Knights), Nidaa Masr, and the Coalition of the Egyptian Front and the Independence Current.

Marawan said the committee will announce 16 September the final number of electoral lists who applied, and those who applied for independent seats.

Meanwhile, the committee earlier extended the deadline for submitting medical check-ups until 15 September only for those applicants who had filed before the 12 September deadline but had to re-undergo medical check-ups following a recent court order which barred the HEC from accepting older exams.

Those applicants had undergone medical check-ups in February in the registration process to run in the parliamentary elections that were scheduled for last March but were postponed.
