Egypt military court sentences 250 Muslim Brotherhood members to life in prison

A military court on Tuesday sentenced 250 Muslim Brotherhood members to life in jail for their involvement in violent actions that took place in the Nile Delta governorate Beheira following the ouster of Islamist president Mohamed Morsi in 2013. A military court on Tuesday sentenced 250 Muslim Brotherhood members to life in jail for their involvement in violent actions that took place in the Nile Delta governorate Beheira following the ouster of Islamist president Mohamed Morsi in 2013.

Prominent Brotherhood leader and former parliamentarian, Gamal Heshmat, who is currently exiled in Turkey, was among those sentenced.

A further 249 Brotherhood members were also sentenced to between five and 15 years in prison on Tuesday in a military court on charges of setting a police station and government building on fire in Beheira governorate.

In June, a court sentenced ousted Islamist president Mohamed Morsi to death and to life in jail on two separate trials. The death sentence was for the 2011 Wadi Natroun prison break, while the second sentence was for espionage – conspiring with foreign powers including Hamas, Hezbollah and Iran's Revolutionary Guards – to destabilise Egypt.

Mohamed Badie, the Brotherhood's supreme guide, was also sentenced to death in the Wadi Natroun prison break case.
