Mubarak has fully served prison time: MoI

Former president Hosni Mubarak has served his sentence on charges of embezzling public money, and will not be imprisoned further, the Minister of Interior Aid for Prison Affairs Hassan al-Sohagy told Youm7 Wednesday.

Mubarak and his sons Alaa and Gamal were sentenced to three years in prison May 9 by the Cassation Court on charges of embezzlement of public funds allocated to renovate presidential palaces, which estimated 125 million EGP ($ 17 million) of state funds.

Mubarak, however, had been in remand since 2011 following the January 25 Revolution. According to the Egyptian law, prison sentences are calculated from the time a suspect enters remand.

The charges related to embezzling funds allocated for the upkeep of the presidential palaces were the last charges Mubarak faces after charges of killing peaceful protesters during the Jan. 25 uprising were dropped, and he was acquitted of exporting Egyptian gas to Israel at below-market prices Nov. 29, 2014.

Since the acquittal, Mubarak has been under house arrest at the Maadi military hospital in Cairo.
