Sanaa Abd al-Gawad and her son Anas, are accused of the attack as they went to visit Beltagy in December 2014, Youm7 reported.

On the day of the reported attack Beltagy was on a hunger strike, according to Al-Masroon, and the family was denied permission to visit, despite having sought authorization before they arrived, and his wife and son had an altercation with a guard.

In January 2014, Nasr City Prosecution ordered Anas el-Beltagy along with other three students to 15 days in jail pending investigation on charges of possessing unlicensed weapons, inciting riots in universities, calling for protests and joining a terrorist organization.

The investigations carried out earlier by Nasr City Prosecution accuse Anas and the other suspects of using an apartment in Nasr City as a hideout to incite violence against police forces, and to call on students in Ain Shams University to protest.
