Political parties discuss amending parliament election laws

Socialist People’s Alliance Party (SPAP) head Abdel Ghafar Shokr told Youm7 Tuesday that their participation in the next parliament election depends on amending the Election Law.

He added that the current system does not give women and youth the chance to win in the parliament and that participating in the elections is too expensive.

Shokr said that the parties of the Civil Democratic Current bloc will hold a meeting Sunday to make a decision regarding elections.  Dostour Party spokesperson Khaled Daoud said Tuesday that they will also discuss in Sunday’s meeting electoral alliances in preparation for the next parliament and the latest developments in the Egyptian political scene.

Additionally, the party’s secretary general, Yaqut al-Sanousy, told Youm7 Tuesday that the party is making a list of its candidates, and that the party has candidates in different categories that include women, Christians and expatriates.

Sanousy also said that the next parliament needs the participation of all political powers, as it will issue legislation that should reflect the principles of the 2011 January 25 Revolution.

Sanousy said that although the party refuses the current Parliamentary Election Law, it will still participate in the next election, as boycotting elections “does not benefit civil parties that look for democratic transformation.”
