Egypt court to announce Habib El-Adly verdict on 12 June

A court in Giza will announce its verdict in the retrial of Mubarak-era interior minister Habib El-Adly on 12 June.

In May 2011, El-Adly was convicted of money laundering and profiteering, for which he received a 12-year jail sentence. Last month, however, the Court of Cassation overturned the conviction and ordered a retrial.

He remains in prison, where he is currently serving another five-year sentence for squandering public funds in the notorious 'license plates' case, in which a German company was awarded a government contract to provide license plates for vehicles at inflated prices.

Official documents obtained by state-run daily Al-Ahram in September 2012 indicated that El-Adly's personal fortune stood at some $3 billion, including real estate assets.

El-Adly, along with ousted president Hosni Mubarak, is also undergoing a retrial for killing protesters during the January 2011 uprising. Death sentences given in this case in 2012 were overturned by an appeal court.
