Fotouh: Presidency did not invite us to Wednesday meeting

Abdel Moneim Aboul Fotouh, former presidential candidate and president of the Misr Al-Qawia Party, said on Tuesday that the party was not aware of a national dialogue meeting called by the presidency on Wednesday.Abdel Moneim Aboul Fotouh, former presidential candidate and president of the Misr Al-Qawia Party, said on Tuesday that the party was not aware of a national dialogue meeting called by the presidency on Wednesday.

In a statement issued Tuesday, interim President Adly Mansour invited several parties to a national dialogue on Wednesday to discuss the presidential and parliamentary elections laws in response to criticism around granting immunity to Supreme Presidential Electoral Committee’s (SPEC) decisions.

Several politicians, legal experts and rights activists have voiced their concern over granting SPEC decisions immunity, including Mohamed El-Gamal, former head of Egypt’s State Council, and potential presidential candidate Hamdeen Sabbahi, who threatened to leave the presidential race if the article was left unchanged.

Fotouh spoke of other political issues during an interview with the Al-Nahar television channel on Tuesday, saying that his party objects to the constitutional amendments because they wanted the constitution to be amended by an elected committee instead of the 50-member committee appointed by the interim president.

He also said he is not worried about the possibility of Minister of Defense Abdel Fatah al-Sisi running in the presidential elections because he is not competing in the elections this year.

Fotouh also said during the interview that the army should focus only on protecting the borders and should not be involved in conflicts inside Egypt, adding that internal security is the responsibility of the police not the armed forces.
