Smoke bomb found in Cairo Uni. student housing

Cairo University security found a smoke bomb Tuesday in the student residence University City, reported Youm7.

The device was connected to electric cables in a bathroom in building no. 12, and security bomb squads moved into the University City and dismantled it without any losses.

Students resumed classes on Sunday, after the start of the second semester had been postponed by several weeks over  negotiations on securing campuses. The last semester was punctuated by violent demonstrations, clashes with security, and raids on universities by both students and police.

Universities signed a protocol in February before the semester began with the Interior Ministry that allowed security forces to be present on universities and interfere in the event of violence.

Since the start of the semester, the Administrative Security of Cairo University has stepped up its presence at the main gates of the university to search cars and identity cards of students. Female guards were also present to inspect female students. Many university students protested against the presence of security guards on campus and demanded the release of their colleagues.

Over the last few days, pro-Muslim Brotherhood students demonstrations have faced increasing opposition from military supporters and anti-Brotherhood protestors, especially after the rise in target attacks on security forces following the ouster of Mohamed Morsi .
