Egypt evacuates diplomats from Libya after kidnapping

Egypt evacuated its diplomats from Libya on Saturday night after five of their number were kidnapped on Friday.

The kidnapped envoys, who were abducted by unknown gunmen, included the administrative and cultural attachés.

A spokesman for the Libyan ministry for foreign affairs, Said Al-Aswad, told MENA agency that the motive behind the kidnapping is still unknown and that Libyan authorities were investigating.

Earlier on Saturday, the Libyan ambassador to Egypt had said that the kidnapping of Egyptian diplomats in Tripoli could be in retaliation for the arrest of the head of Libyan Revolutionary Operations Chamber, Abu Obedia El-Zawy in Alexandria on Friday.

According to news sources, El-Zawy's group was responsible for the kidnapping of Libyan Prime Minister Ali Zeidan last October.

The Libyan General National Congress (GNC), which is drafting a new Libyan constitution, has demanded Egyptian authorities release Abu Obedia immediately.
