The US Embassy in Cairo warned its nationals on Wednesday of a possible terrorist attack in Egypt without mentioning any further details.
“The Embassy is aware of a potential threat posted on a website by the Hasm Group, a known terrorist organization, suggesting some kind of unspecified action this evening,” a statement published on the Embassy’s official website read.
The statement mentioned that the Embassy had no further information about the potential threat, and is in contact with Egyptian authorities in case additional information is provided.
“US citizens should continue to follow sound security practices and adhere to the security guidelines provided in the Travel Warning for Egypt issued by the State Department on December 23, 2016,” the statement added.
The guidelines instructed American nationals to avoid traveling to the Western Desert and the Sinai Peninsula, except to Sharm el-Sheikh via airplane.
Foreign countries operating in Egypt warned its employees to avoid Egyptian state institutions, security forces’ assembly areas, churches and social clubs for foreigners residing in Egypt.
