Minister of Higher Education postpones student elections

CAIRO: Minister of Higher Education Hossam Eissa agreed with Mohamed Badran, head of Egypt’s Student’s Union, to postpone the student’s union elections in Egypt’s universities until the second semester in order to amend the regulations governing it.

The first draft of the regulations caused controversy with many students criticizing it for restricting their freedom by prohibiting student movements, which are not subject to the union’s authority, and requiring student magazines or publications to be pre-approved before being published.

As a result, the ministry decided to postpone the elections, which were supposed to take place in the first six weeks of the current semester.

The minister also said that they are not against the participation of students belonging to the Muslim Brotherhood in preparing the new regulations, however, they refused.
